Clunny Farm has big plans for 2018

MIDRAND - Clunny Farm Centre had an exciting 2017 and hoping for a better year ahead.

Clunny Farm Centre, based in Sun Valley, has had major and exciting developments this year and plans to have an even better 2018.

The centre is a residential and working facility for adults with intellectual disabilities. It was founded in 1964 and currently accommodates 54 residents, ranging in age from 22 to 82 years old.

Development officer for the centre, Caroline van Rooyen, explained that the centre secured funding for the renovation of two buildings, one which was turned into a TV/craft centre and the other a fully-equipped gym.

In addition, the on-site bakery, manned by the residents, has grown into a fully-fledged business operation with orders coming in on a regular basis from local supermarkets and businesses.

In the run-up to Christmas, a total of 600 kg of biscuits were made and distributed.

“A highlight of the year was an offer by New Horse Haven in Sun Valley to bring horses around that residents could interact with. They absolutely loved walking, leading the horses and the physical interaction with them. We are hoping to do this on a regular basis in 2018,” she said.

Van Rooyen said plans for 2018 included the re-establishment of their two large vegetable tunnels. She said with assistance from the DisChem Foundation they will start producing organic vegetables in January 2018.

“The DisChem Foundation has undertaken to provide training for some of our residents and their Garden Foundation staff will come in and do soil preparation and provide seedlings for the project.”

Another highlight for Clunny Farm Centre was raising R50 000 for residents to go on holiday and receive Christmas gifts.

“The untiring efforts of Clunny staff and its board members to provide a caring home for our residents is very much appreciated.”

One of the achievements for Clunny Farm Centre was having their own gym for residents.

Van Rooyen concluded by thanking the Midrand community for all their goodwill and support during 2017. She further wished for a safe and peaceful holiday season.
