Momberg tells court her apologies have been rejected

JOBURG – Vicki Momberg tells the court that her attempts to apologise for her racist rant have been rejected on several occasions.

Estranged estate agent, Vicki Momberg has told the court that her efforts to apologise for her racist rant have been met with total rejection. Momberg was testifying in the pre-sentencing proceedings at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court.

Last month Momberg was found guilty on four counts of crimen injuria after she was caught on video, spewing racist remarks at a black police officer. It was later found that Momberg also used the k-word during a 10111 call.

An emotional Momberg wept throughout her testimony and told the court that she has made about eight apologies, some in writing, but they have all been rejected. She claims that she also tried to apologise to Constable Clement Mkhondo, the police officer whom she swore at using the ‘k-word’, but said the officer also rejected her apology.

“No words can explain how I feel about my actions on the day,” Momberg told the court not even one of her apologies were accepted and she regrets her actions on the day. Momberg said her actions brought shame to her family and colleagues.

She testified that she also tried to apologise to Brigadier Lettie Hugo (formerly with the Douglasdale Police Station), but claimed that this apology was also rejected.

In mitigation before sentencing, the defence brought Michael Mokobi, a lawyer by profession, who claims to be a friend of Momberg.

Mokobi told the court that in the 13 years that he has known Momberg, he had never seen behaviour that suggested that Momberg was a racist. Their relationship started when he was looking for a property and they have been friends since then. “She’s like a sister to me. We’ve shared food, sandwiches and even hugged,” Mokobi explained.

State prosecutor Yusuf Baba told Mokobi that Momberg had no choice but to be nice to him as there was a monetary gain for her in their relationship. “She sees you as a bank because she will get commission for selling those properties to you. She is nice to you because there is a benefit in it for her,” Baba told Mokobi.
