Battle of the books

MIDRAND – Summerhill School youngsters participate in the junior version of Story Skirmish.

Summerhill School participated in the Story Skirmish junior version of the ‘Battle of Books’ at the Midrand Municipal Library.

“Midrand Library, together with other libraries across the country are trying to encourage students, mostly boys, to read,” said Summerhill School librarian Teressa Oates. She added that Musenga Mfula, Tanmay Velegada, Tawana Njowa, Luben Human and Murunwa Ratshisusu participated. Musenga, in Grad 3, was the youngest competitor.

Story skirmish takes place in the following manner:

  • Receive a list of books to read
  • Questions are answered during two rounds
  • A rapid-fire question session follows and participants have to raise their flag to answer questions
  • Points are deducted for every wrong answer.

The team with the most points goes on to compete against other areas regionally and nationally.

“We had a wonderful time and I am very happy that all our participants received certificates because this will encourage them to continue reading and learning,” concluded Oates.
