Ivory Park community and Midrand Police disappoint

MIDRAND – Chairperson of the Midrand Community Policing Forum, however, believes the station is 'coming up'.

Midrand Police Station has claimed an undesirable spot as the worst performing station in Gauteng, this according to Gauteng Police Commissioner Deliwe De Lange.

De Lange said this while presenting the annual crime statistics for the 2016/2017 financial year to the Community Safety Committee in the provincial legislature on Tuesday.

Midrand Community Policing Forum (CPF) has however said that the station is coming up.

The forums’s chairperson, Steven Johnstone said, “While Midrand Police Station was reported as the worst performing station in 2016 and 2017, the station is now in the green in respect of crime.

“Under the new leadership of Brigadier David Tsotsotso and his dedicated team, we are taking a no tolerance approach to crime in Midrand,” Johnstone explained.

Ivory Park also topped the crime charts as the most dangerous place in Gauteng with 120 people murdered in the past financial year.

According to reports, crime in Ivory Park went up by 14 percent, there were also many attempted murder cases in Ivory Park, 168 cases were reported in the past financial year.

The latest Ivory Park murder that Midrand Reporter reported on is the case of an Ivory Park man who confessed to killing his girlfriend and, after his arrest, led police to where he dumped her body in President Park.

An Ivory Park resident, Nobuhle Nyathi said crime was really bad in Ivory Park and crimes such as theft were common. “It’s worse for us who walk to Midrand to look for cleaning jobs. Our phones and bags get stolen,” said Nyathi.
