Residents informed about social infrastructure being built in Region A

The City of Johannesburg is pumping a lot of money into social infrastructure such as a library, sports field, indoor sports centre, roads and bridges among others in various communities of Region A.

Residents who attended the first scheduled meeting in Region A about the IDP feedback sessions, at Halfway House Primary School, on 2 November, were told that the City was currently busy constructing some of the social infrastructures which the residents had requested. In addition, other infrastructure projects were in the pipeline already.

The City is going across Johannesburg to different communities with its budget – where residents have the opportunity to see how much money is allocated for their neighbourhoods.

Addressing a packed hall, the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, Michael Sun said, “The City is currently building the following amenities in Ward 92 – a library, the sports field and an indoor sports centre to the tune of R1 500 000.”

Residents at the meeting raised concerns such as serious traffic problems because of development and insufficient road infrastructure. Some residents complained about the development in the region happening too fast, which has led to too many complex issues arising.

Sun responded by saying, the City had budgeted about R20 million over three years towards the tarring of roads in Ext 23.

“Some of the roads are already on the list for Phase 2 of current work, which is undertaken by the Johannesburg Roads Agency. The remainder of the roads will be constructed under Phase 3.”

Sun added that the City plans to build a bridge to cross between Sagewood Street and Le Roux Avenue to Noordwyk in Ward 112.

Other major projects in the planning phase include the building of a bridge in Emfulani extensions 1 and 2 and the building of a proper sports field in Ward 112.

Current projects taking place on the ground in various wards include:

  • Upgrade of sewer line – wards 77 and 79
  • Kaalspruit Eco-Park Development – Ward 78
  • Gravels roads upgrade project – wards 78 and 111
  • Implementation of complete street features in Ivory Park – Ward 77
  • Reconstruction of roads in Ivory Park (Limpopo and Nigel) – Ward 77
  • Conversion of open drains in Ivory Park – wards 77 and 133
  • Construction of Linear Markets (informal traders) Kopanong Precinct – Ward 77
  • Gravel roads upgrade in Ivory Park Ext 9 – Ward 78.
