No escape after botched robbery at MTN

MIDRAND – Two suspects arrested following attempted robbery in Randjespark.

Midrand police arrested two suspects at Glen Austin on 29 October following a robbery that took place at MTN’s offices in Randjespark, Midrand.

“A truck went to the MTN offices pretending to be delivering unknown packages, but the three security guards were not aware of the delivery and contacted security control who authorised the truck to be allowed access,” said Midrand police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmakgomo Semono.

Semono furthermore said, once the truck was inside the premises a large group of unknown men, allegedly more than 10 men, jumped out from the back of the truck and stole equipment.

“One security guard, who was not among the three securities, which were at the entrance gate, saw what was happening and hid while contacting the security control and police,” said Semono.

Police gave chase to the truck when it was trying to get away and the police kept a close chase, which took the robbers into unfamiliar territories, eventually driving into a dead end in Glen Austin.

Many of the suspects managed to get away on foot but two were caught and arrested.

“When two of the suspects were arrested they revealed that all three of the security guards working at MTN were also involved in the robbery,” said Semono.

The three security guards were arrested including one woman who worked at security control and authorised entry of the truck.

Police investigations are still proceeding to try to find the unknown number of remaining suspects.
