ICYMI: Brother arrested after allegedly raping his sister for years

MIDRAND – Brother confesses his crime to the police after allegedly raping his younger sister for years in Ivory Park.

An Ivory Park man was arrested on 7 October for the alleged rape of his sister over a period of three to four years.

“The 20-year-old suspect is the one who surrendered himself at the police station and confessed his deed to the police. The alleged victim and parents were called to the station for questioning on the matter,” said the Ivory Park police spokesperson Captain Bernard Matimulane.

It’s not yet known what made the suspect confess after such a long period of time.

In November 2016, the family found out about the sexual abuse of their 15-year-old daughter by her adopted brother.

The alleged rape had been taking place since the victim was 12-years-old. When the family found out they didn’t open a case against the suspect but decided to handle the matter as a family without involving the law.

The station commander of the Ivory Park police Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo said any family intervention in any form of sexual crime, should be condemned and strongly discouraged. Sex crimes should be reported to the police immediately.

“Allegations that the suspect attempted to [abuse] the victim even after the so-called family intervention clearly illustrate that domestic interventions which exclude the law enforcement authorities do not work. We all have an obligation to protect the victims in matters such as these,” said Ngcobo.

Detectives from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit are investigating the case.
