The Midrand Police Station Social Crime Prevention Unit team members, together with Metro officers took children from Glen Austin High School to Leeuwkop Correctional Centre for a prison tour on 26 September.
Sergeant Matome Tlamela, who heads up the station’s school operations, said the tour was a success as the schoolchildren viewed the prison cells and were able to hold one-on-one sessions with the prisoners.
“As we are entering the festive season and schools are about to close, it was important to run the prison tour campaign so that young people are advised to stay safe and vigilant at all times and report criminal activities,” said Tlamela.
Tips for parents were as followed:
- Children must not be left without supervision for a long time
- Young people should report their whereabouts whenever they leave home
- Children must travel in groups to avoid being victims of crime
- They must stay away from drugs and alcohol.
“We are hopeful that the prison visit will encourage our young people to stay away from unlawful behaviour and illegal substances.”
