Johannesburg Roads Agency announced that they would embark on an R89.5 million gravel roads upgrade in Mayibuye and Kaalfontein in Midrand.
In addition to the upgrade, they will prioritise the R13.9 million Kaalfontein pedestrian bridge construction to ensure residents’ safety.
“The City’s combined investment of R103.4 million in low-income communities in Midrand forms part of the City’s goals of ensuring improved residents’ experiences, job creation and access to service delivery,” said Bertha Peters-Scheepers, the communications officer for the roads agency.
The gravel roads upgrade to surfaced standards in Kaalfontein and Mayibuye are underway and the project includes the implementation of storm water drainage systems.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport, Nonhlanhla Makhuba said progress on the ground had been noted with visible improvements to the local community.

The Kaalfontein and Mayibuye gravel roads upgrade are aligned to the City’s priorities in ensuring the advancement of pro-poor development that provides redress through the provision of services.
Makhuba said,”These roads would ensure access services and improved mobility and the construction of the Kaalfontein pedestrian bridge would form part of the City’s priority pedestrian bridge development programme that would enable the safe movement of residents in flood conditions.”
The City is focused on township development through infrastructure and maintenance of community upgrades in Region A.
