Ward 112 celebrates women by handing out roses on Women’s Day

CARLSWALD – Ward 112 DA members celebrate amazing women in the community.

In honour of one of the most important days in South Africa’s history, a group of DA Ward 112 activists took to Carlswald and Blue Hills Shopping Centres to give flowers to ladies on Women’s Day.

Councillor Madeleine Hicklin said, “Today is an important day in South Africa’s history. National Women’s Day commemorates the 1956 march of 20 000 brave women who stood up against the Apartheid segregation laws. The march, led by Helen Joseph, Lilian Ngoyi and Bertha Mashaba, was a resounding success and rallied women from across the country in the first real show of force against Apartheid structures.”

The branch executives of DA Ward 112 wanted to celebrate the strong, inspirational and brave women who live in the suburbs. “Strength is not only about physical strength, it’s about emotional strength too. It takes tremendous courage to survive against insurmountable odds, to stand up for what is right and good in society, and to shout out against that which isn’t,” Hicklin said.

“By giving out a flower, a single rose, to as many women as we could in two hours, we were symbolically saying ‘thank you’ to all those gladiators who have made a difference. We just wanted to say ‘thank you’ to all the moms out there who are the rock that their children and families depend on; to the women who get up every day and carry on – in spite of sometimes being broken and battered – we wanted to celebrate and honour your journey.

“We may not have reached every single woman who was out today, but we did want to say thank you. Long may our strength live on. We are the backbone of society.”
