Mandela’s spirit lives on in Midrand

MIDRAND – Members of Ward 112 spent Mandela Day enriching the lives of those in need.

Cupcakes, courtesy of Sandra Hurlimann and blankets, dog and cat food were brought by the parents and children of the Midrand Montessori schools to the Midrand SPCA while 30 DA members and activists gathered at the Come One, Come All Daycare Centre and Crèche on Dlamini Drive in Ivory Park, for a revamp.

Goods were brought by the parents and children of the Midrand Montessori schools in the spirit of Mandela.

Armed with paint donations, brushes and trays supplied by private donors, Mica Midway Mews, Thor Projects and Builders Warehouse, the enthusiastic volunteers set about transforming bare walls into a children’s wonderland complete with chalkboards and murals.

Flutterby Gardening and Nursery donated seedlings and seeds for the vegetable garden, while wax crayons from BSC Stationery were donated and 12-year-old Sheldon Spear, founder of Need2Read, donated books to start a library and a reading corner. On Mandela Day itself, ward 112 members donated 67 minutes of their time to the Vodacom Foundation and Gift of the Givers to help pack 1 500 buckets of food for the needy.

Members of Ward 112 in Midrand did their part for Mandela Day with activities lined up from 16–18 July and like many other organisations in South Africa, believe that every day should be a Mandela Day.
