Vodacom fights hunger for Mandela Day

MIDRAND – Vodacom packed food worth millions of rand for Mandela Day food parcels for schools.

 

Vodacom hosted food packing sessions at Vodaworld on 18 July as part of Mandela Day’s 67 Minutes.

The chief officer for corporate affairs at Vodacom, Taki Netshitenzhe said Mandela Day is about celebrating the life of a legend and ensuring his name lives forever. And because of his inspirational legacy, everyone should play a role in ensuring the lives of future generations experience peace, are educated and there is reconciliation.

“Vodacom Foundation is focused a lot on education because Mandela was passionate about the education of children, therefore, the Vodacom mobile education initiative partnering with government provides education platforms, connectivity to schools, library corners and Internet cafes in different areas across the country,” she added.

Netshitenzhe furthermore said the mobile service provider does not only give back to society on Mandela Day but also aims for one of the United Nations’ development goal of zero hunger. The mobile company spent more than R5 million on the food to be distributed to various schools.

Staff members, community members, celebrities and a few representatives from the sports fraternity participated in packing the food parcels which will be given to various schools under the feeding scheme selected by the Department of Basic Education.
