Zero tolerance on water theft in City of Johannesburg

MIDRAND – MMC for Finance Rabelani Dagada has embarked on a zero tolerance campaign on water theft.

MMC for Finance Rabelani Dagada made an unannounced visit to new development next to Mall of Africa on 4 July following allegations of water theft by contractors.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe revealed that Dagada conducted spot checks on meters at one of the sites at the Waterfall City development with technical assistance from Joburg Water.

It was discovered that there was theft of water through improper installation of non-City water meters on fire hydrant outlets, installed meters not being connected to the City’s billing system and meters only being installed in April last year while construction had begun in 2015.

“The purpose of the MMC’s visit was to address the Joburg Water’s non-technical water losses in order to improve revenue collection. The MMC will be doing more spot checks across various sites in the city and he will be doing them more frequently,” said Deppe.

She added that this will allow for the identification and prosecution of transgressors. “Water theft will not be tolerated and offenders will be dealt with accordingly.”
