Two suspects are arrested for murdering a man with pick handles in Ivory Park

MIDRAND — Two men, who went on a rampage at a tavern in Ivory Park, were arrested on 15 June for murder.

Two men were arrested on 15 June for murder after launching an attack on patrons at a tavern in Ivory Park in May.

The suspects aged 24 and 26 apparently went out on a hunt for their sister’s boyfriend whom they accused of breaking windows at her house. According to the police, after the boyfriend allegedly broke the windows, the pair went looking for him and arrived at his rented home, which also has a tavern.

“The suspects began by breaking windows and all hell broke loose. They allegedly began to assault patrons at the place, passersby and bystanders, including the deceased,” said spokesperson for Ivory Park Police Captain Bernard Matimulane.

The duo allegedly assaulted the 37-year-old victim with pick handles. He sustained injuries to the head and died in hospital on 6 June.

Station commander for the Ivory Park Police Station, Brigadier David Ngcobo has commended two detective constables for their tireless efforts in arresting the suspects. “We thank all those who opened up to the police and provided statements under oath, for had it not been for witnesses, the two suspects may have got away with murder,” said Ngcobo.

The suspects will appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court.
