Midrand police embark on gender-based violence awareness campaign

MIDRAND – Midrand Police Station's social crime prevention team have embarked on a gender-based violence awareness campaign.

Midrand Police Station’s social crime prevention team, together with People Opposing Women Abuse (Powa) were speaking at the St Nicholas Anglican Church in Ennerdale about gender-based violence on women and children on 11 June.

Sergeant Matome Tlamela said the talk was aimed at raising awareness about gender-based violence, especially because there have been numerous cases of violence towards women and children, which often lead to death.

“People were encouraged to break the silence on abuse and were also educated on the cycle of abuse and the different forms of abuse,” said Tlamela who was one of the speakers on the day.

She highlighted the need for people to be observant in a relationship and if an individual notices any signs of abuse, they should rather walk away from such a relationship for their own safety.

Abuse victims are encouraged to utilise the Victim Empowerment Centres which are available at all police stations. “Most victims open abuse cases and withdraw them before respondents appear in court.”
