Cleaning the Noordwyk Park to celebrate Youth Day

MIDRAND — Residents of Midrand got the hands dirty on Youth Day to clean up Noordwyk Park.

More than 40 residents of Midrand heeded the call to clean up Noordwyk Park on Kiaat and Liebenberg roads to celebrate Youth Day on 16 June.

The clean-up was organised by Ward 112 councillor Madeleine Hicklin and Let’s Clean Midrand, a non-government organisation. Hicklin said through the Let’s Clean Midrand website, various Facebook pages and WhatsApp groups, the community of Midrand was mobilised to assist on the day.

“It was truly heart-warming to see how seriously the youngsters took to the task,” said Hicklin. “And when they got bored with cleaning, the lure of the jumping castle, face painting and general playing together – wonderfully supervised by staff from Montessori School – ensured that the youngsters could continue to enjoy the sun while their parents cleaned the park.”

One of the founding members of the organisation, Esme Bense, who could not participate on the day due to ill health, thanked the residents for their hard work.

“Judging from the pictures I saw and the reports from councillor Madeleine Hicklin, everyone who turned up to help clean Noordwyk Park worked their fingers to the bone. I can’t thank you enough,” she said.

Hicklin further thanked the director for Region A, Abigail Ndlovu, and Nompumelelo Mthethewa of PikitUp for ensuring that the refuse bags were collected and a truck was available to assist. She also thanked Builder’s Warehouse, Midrand Montessori, Dagmar & Sandra Hürlimann, Clive and Marilyn Saunders, Tanya Nyce and Carma Design for their assistance.

“But the biggest thank you had to go to the community across Midrand who pitched up and pitched in to honour our youth and clean up Noordwyk Park. We couldn’t have done it without you.”
