Knysna fire victims are getting some help from Noordwyk for 2 weeks

MIDRAND – Hicklin and Marx are requesting food and clothing donations to be dropped off at the school which will be transported to Knysna.

Ward 112 councillor Madeleine Hicklin and Noordwyk Primary School principal Lynelle Marx have embarked on a two-week disaster relief drive for Knysna fire victims.

Hicklin and Marx are requesting food and clothing donations to be dropped off at the school which will be transported to Knysna to assist destitute families who were left stranded after their houses were destroyed by the recent fires.

“Taking advantage of the incredible offer made by DHL Couriers to transport disaster relief free of charge to Knysna to assist victims of the fires, we have embarked on a joint venture to assist,” said Hicklin. “Principal Marx has asked that all learners at Noordwyk Primary School bring an item needed by the relief fund as a ‘daily tax’ when they come to school.”

Hicklin added that as a ‘reward’ the children would be allowed to wear a warm jacket of their choice to school. “I think it is an incredible way of encouraging the learners to assist, and getting them to understand just how fortunate they are,” said Hicklin.

Marx said they were committed to instilling an ethos of caring in their children and were thrilled when Hicklin agreed to assist by making this a community project as well.

“We will be acting as a collection point – anytime between 6.30am and 3pm from Monday to Friday for the next two weeks,” said Marx. “Community members can bring their contributions to the school and Johannes Msibi of DHL Couriers has agreed to collect from us next Thursday and the following Friday for transportation down to the affected area.”

The community is requested to bring clothing, towels and blankets, baby formula and nappies, sanitary products, toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, bottled water, wash cloths, and tinned or canned non-perishable food (fish, meat, soup and vegetables). A card or letter of hope may be attached to the donation.
