Dance comes alive at Glen Austin High School

MIDRAND – Two girls from Glen Austin High School's dance team are selected to represent Gauteng at the National Dance Festival.

Glen Austin High School’s sports department embarked on a new journey this year when it participated in the Dance Sports School League led by Carolien van den Berg, the school’s Afrikaans teacher.

“Glen Austin High School was the smallest school that was part of the competition, however, the school excelled,” said the school’s sports coordinator, Loshnee Iyer.

Van den Berg added, “I’m so proud of my learners and their accomplishments this year. It’s every teacher’s dream to witness realities such as these come alive.”

Buhle Masuku and Keamogetswe Mothlaabane were the two teenagers who were chosen to be part of the Gauteng dance team that is set to tour to KwaZulu-Natal for the National Dance Festival on 28 June.

Both girls exclaimed that they were very excited and thanked Van den Berg and Iyer for believing in them and motivating them to keep going after their goals.

Iyer said, “Days like these are the reason why I became a teacher. When we started to dance as a sport in the school this year we only had one goal, which was to lay a strong foundation for the years ahead.

“To accomplish what we have accomplished far exceeds every expectation. It would be an understatement to say that I am proud of these girls.”
