GPSA launches Girl Health initiative

MIDRAND – Young girls receieved hygiene packs and more when Girl Power South Africa launched the Girl Health initiative at Ikhaya Lothando Community Centre in Tembisa.

Girl Power South Africa (GPSA) launched Girls Health at Ikhaya Lothando Community Centre in Tembisa on 27 May.

GPSA was founded by a young violinist, Neo Motsatse. It does not only aim at empowering young girls to be independent but it also seeks to empower girls to make a change in their communities.

The initiative offers talks on sexual reproductive health and encourages girls to make right and healthy choices. Girls Health is part of the GPSA after-school programme offered at Ingqayizivele Primary School in Tembisa, to minimize teen pregnancies and help girls understand and embrace their journey of transition from girlhood to womanhood.

Some of the guest speakers at the event included Sindi Dlamini, founder of Tembisa Teens with Purpose and Busi Dziba, founder of Bongulwazi Consulting. Dlamini and Dziba encouraged girls to abstain from sex and highlighted the dangers of young girls engaging in sexual activities.

GPSA Girls Health champion, Wande Nduna mobilised St James Primary School to contribute hygiene packs, which contained sanitary towels, roll-on deodorant, a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, face cloths and other goodies. The hygiene packs were distributed to girls attending the launch on the day.

“It was heartwarming to see girls come together to make things happen and to see the smiles on the beneficiaries’ faces as they received their hygiene packs, which were donated by people who understand that it takes an entire village to raise a child. This is the beginning of many great things to come for GPSA and the community of Tembisa,” said Fezeka Motsatse.
