Fundraiser aims to help one-year-old girl walk again

MIDRAND – A family of a one-year-old girl diagnosed with a rare disease has organised a fun walk to raise funds for the girl's surgery.

In a bid to get their daughter to walk, a Midrand family of a one-year-old little girl – diagnosed with a rare disease – has organised a fun walk at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort on 20 May to raise funds for her surgery.

The walk will take place from 9am until 12pm. Children and pensioners will pay R90 and adults, R120 to participate.

“We are still trying to raise funds for our daughter. We call on the public to support the cause and join us in our efforts to raise funds for our daughter to have a normal life like every other normal child,” said her parents, Tshepo and Moipone Moropa.

Phenyo Moropa was diagnosed with a rare disease at birth that affects one in a million babies in the world. Born in March 2016, her parents were told that she suffers from the extremely rare congenital limb deficiency known as tibial hemimelia. This means the tibia in her right leg is missing.

Her story was first published in the Midrand Reporter on December 2016 when her parents requested for donation of funds from the public to save their daughter’s leg, which doctors threatened to amputate due to lack of treatment for her disease in South Africa. So far, the family has raised R184 000. However, their daughter will need three surgeries and rehabilitation at a cost of $146 000 [over R2 million] in Florida in the USA.

A letter from the Paley Institute in Florida confirmed little Phenyo’s diagnosis and stated that her chances of walking with her two legs would be to be treated at the institute.

Tickets for the fun walk are available only on quicket.co.za. To contribute visit www.getpwalking.org.za or contact the Moropas on 083 642 4156/083 2661 431.
