MIDRAND – Tembisa special police unit arrested two suspects for possession of hijacked vehicles in Ivory Park on 7 May.

The Tembisa Tactical Response Team arrested two suspects in Ivory Park on 7 May for possession of a hijacked vehicle.

The first suspect, a 36-year-old man from Kwaggafontein in Mpumalanga, was apprehended after a car chase by the police in the area.

According to the police, the suspect hit a stone during the chase, jumped out of the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. The police eventually caught up with the suspect and arrested him.

The police haven’t established yet if the suspect was part of a gang of armed hijackers who hijacked the vehicle in Mpumalanga on 6 May.

The second suspect, a 26-year-old man was arrested as he was about to wash the hijacked Mazda 2 vehicle. He claimed that the vehicle was brought to him by his friends to be washed.

Both men will appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court to face charges of possession of a stolen vehicle.

Station Commander for the Ivory Park Police Station Brigadier David Ngcobo said he was very pleased with the arrests and said Ivory Park was not a destination of choice for stolen vehicles.

“My police officers, together with colleagues from specialised units such as the Tactical Response Team, are committed to ensuring that those who bring stolen and hijacked vehicles [here] get caught,” he said.

Ngcobo further called on the community to report any suspicious looking vehicles in the area.
