Schoolchildren clean up for Earth Day

KYALAMI – Express!ons Junior Prep schoolchildren celebrated Earth Day by cleaning up Norfolk Road.

In celebration of Earth Day on 22 April, schoolchildren from Express!ons Junior Prep School took to the streets on 24 April and picked up litter along Norfolk Road in Kyalami.

The children travelled about 800m and filled up about 10 plastic bags of rubbish.

Carla De Gouveia from Express!ons Junior Prep School said the school decided to host this activity to teach the schoolchildren about the importance of taking care of the community and cleaning up areas.

Gouveia said she was proud of the youngsters, but was shocked by the amount of dirt there was and thinks this activity is something that can be done more often and not only by the schoolchildren, but the community as well.

A few grandparents and guardians also participated in the activity and assisted the children in filling up their plastic bags.

“Hygiene and safety are important, therefore we made sure each pupil wore gloves and was accompanied by adults in their Earth Day activity,” said Gouveia.
