Tempers flare at Region A meeting

MIDRAND – Scuffle breaks out while residents voice their anger at City's Integrated Development gathering for Region A.

 

Police were forced to intervene in a scuffle between residents during the City of Johannesburg’s Integrated Development Plan meeting for Region A at the Midrand High School on 6 April.

The gathering was chaired by the director of Region A, Abigail Ndlovu, and was convened to discuss the plans for the region and also to address community grievances.

At least 50 community members raised their grievances with the City representatives.

The scuffle broke out after one resident attempted to defend the absence of Ward 112 councillor Madeleine Hicklin to angry residents who complained that they did not know the councillor, yet they lived in her ward.

The police were forced to intervene and calm residents down.

The City took note of the community’s pleas not to record this particular meeting as an IDP meeting but to rather refer to it as a ‘consultative meeting’ until every councillor in the region has held a ward meeting and sends their issues to the City to be addressed at the next gathering. This gathering will then be recognised as an IDP meeting.
