Scores of community members join the country in protest against Zuma in Midrand

MIDRAND – Motorists driving on the N1 highway hooted for a reason. Find out why here.

Scores of people joined the Zuma Must Fall silent protest which took place on the bridge on Bridal Veil Street in Midrand on 7 April.

The protest was organised by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the wake of President Jacob Zuma’s decision to fire Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas.

Members of the DA and the public joined together and protested on the bridge above the N1 highway with placards demanding that Zuma resign. Motorists driving past hooted in support of the protesters as they waved their South African flags and placards high in the air.

It’s all about South Africans uniting in the protest.

“Our country has been downgraded. It’s going to affect everyone, from the richest to the poorest, it’s going to hit our pockets hard. It’s going to be harder to find jobs. I think it’s high time that we need a change in government, maybe not the ANC, but Zuma himself has to go,” said one of the protesters, Nimmi Kowlaser.

According to Ward 132 Annette Deppe, about 160 people joined the march and signed the petition demanding Zuma’s resignation.

“I would like to encourage people to keep the pressure up. More people would be travelling north and I would like to see 500 people on the bridge in our next protest,” said Deppe.

The next protest will take place on 13 April at the same venue.
