Major breakthrough for Ivory Park police after tip-off

MIDRAND – Ivory Park police respond to a tip-off which ends with two arrests and the recovery of guns and live ammunition.

Ivory Park police arrested two men for possession of two unlicensed firearms and 161 rounds of live ammunition on 23 March, after they acted on a tip-off.

Captain Bernard Matimulane, communication officer of Ivory Park Police Station said the two men, aged 22 and 38, are also suspected of being behind a spate of robberies in the area. The police are still searching for a third suspect.

The suspects were apprehended in Ext 2 in Ivory Park and accompanied by the police to their home where two toy firearms, identity documents, a grinder, bolt cutter, eight cellphones, two tablets and bank cards were found

Matimulane said the toy guns would look like ‘the real thing’ to someone who is not familiar with guns.

Major General Vincent Leshabane, the cluster commander of the Ekurhuleni North Cluster, said, “We welcome this arrest as it proves our often-repeated emphasis that wherever the community and the police work together, no criminal or criminality is out of reach.”

The two suspects will be charged with possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and dangerous weapons.

Furthermore, investigations into how other people’s identity documents ended in their possession have already started and the police are positive they will be able to solve other cases as a result of these impending investigations.
