Ivory Park police investigate two drownings in a dam in Clayville Ext 45

IVORY PARK – A man drowns while trying to recover the body of a 16-year-old boy who had drowned at a dam near Clayville.

 

Ivory Park police are investigating an inquest into the death of two people who drowned in a dam in Clayville Ext 45 on 11 March.

According to the police, a 16-year-old boy went swimming with his friends at the dam when he drowned. His terrified friends went to inform his parents who quickly rushed to the scene of the accident.

“On arrival, the parent and other bystanders began the arduous task of locating the body as directed to them by the boys who were with the victim. Unfortunately, one of the community members assisting with the search in the dam also drowned in the process,” said the spokesperson for Ivory Park police, Captain Bernard Matimulane.

An inquest docket was opened by the police and investigations are underway.

Brigadier David Ngcobo, station commander of the Ivory Park police, is appealing to the public to be cautious in rivers, streams and dams they don’t know the depth of.

“He [Ngcobo] further called on people to seek assistance from people with the necessary expertise during incidences of this nature. He strongly believes that the second drowning could have been avoided had the police been called to the scene to take over the retrieval task,” concluded Matimulane.
