Man escapes hijacking in Vorna Valley

MIDRAND – Suspects escape attempted hijackings

A man escaped an attempted hijacking on 5 March on the corner of Anton Hartman and Kokkewiet roads in Vorna Valley, after a man approached him at the stop street with a firearm.

According to a spokesperson for Ria Sebetsa Security Service, Danny Maduray, the victim, who was driving a Ford Fiesta at 9pm, was approached by a male suspect who pointed a firearm at him. “The victim pressed on his accelerator and drove off. We drove all around Midrand looking for the suspects who were allegedly driving a blue Golf. By the time the Community Policing Forum members sent us a picture of the vehicle, it was too late and the suspects had already escaped,” he said.

In a separate incident, a man driving a BMW escaped an attempted hijacking on 6 March. The victim said he noticed a Golf following him with every turn he made until he drove to the police station and alerted a community group chat. The Golf sped off.

“He made a U-turn at the police station and our vehicle was waiting for him at one of the streets to escort him home. He used another route and got home safely,” said Maduray who advised motorists to avoid driving late at night.

He said when it is necessary for one to drive late at night, turn the radio or music down, avoid using a cellphone, be vigilant and always travel with a passenger. He encouraged people to call the security company’s control centre on 011 315 9956 for any type of emergency.

“We assist the community with any kind of emergencies, for free. Our clients normally get a quick response because their call goes straight to the control centre and we immediately know where they are,” he added.
