Suspect shot during shootout

MIDRAND – A house robbery suspect was shot and arrested by Midrand police after a shootout.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe’s son allegedly became a victim of a house robbery in Kyalami on 4 February.

Deppe said her son and friends were held at gunpoint at a house party.

Midrand Police Station’s operations commander, Captain Lionel Chetty said the Midrand Community Policing Forum, security companies and the station’s operations team partnered up and chased the suspects who drove a silver Avanza.

“We gave chase and managed to arrest one suspect and recovered one firearm, following a shootout between the suspects and the police. No police officer was injured but one suspect was shot and taken to a hospital,” said Chetty.

The police were searching for five suspects. During the chase, the suspects lost control of their vehicle causing it to overturn. The injured suspect was the only one arrested. The one passenger in the car escaped. The other three suspects were not in the vehicle and their whereabouts are unknown.

Chetty said a TV, shoes, phones and alcohol were recovered, as was a firearm believed to have been used in the crime. He added that he is pleased with the success of the arrest and hopes the other suspects will also be found soon.
