Australia, here they come!

MAYIBUYE – Maphutha is in the process of selecting pupils who will hopefully represent the secondary school in the Igrise student exchange in Australia.

Maphutha Secondary School in Mayibuye, Ivory Park, will send four bright Grade 11s to compete to join the Igrise student exchange programme in Australia.

Fifteen top-performing Grade 11s will be tested on 2 February, but only four will move on to the next round of interviews at the Igrise premises in Pretoria on 4 February. Last year, Shilah Mbewe was among the select four, and she encouraged her schoolmates to grab the opportunity which, she said, had changed her outlook on life and motivated her to be a better person.

During their stay in Australia, the youngsters visit one of the schools, courtesy of Igrise and that country’s Rotary Club. The 18-year-old visited Melbourne, among other Australian cities, but the highlight of her stay was visiting the Twelve Apostles that rise up from the Southern Ocean on Victoria’s coastline.

“I had the most amazing experience in Australia. I have learnt a lot about the country and [its cultures]. It has inspired me to dream bigger, do more and become a better person in life,” she said.

Her teacher, Thomas Molepo, said one of the selected four would hopefully make it to the programme because ‘they have what it takes’.
