Ward Committee Elections

MIDRAND – The IEC held the Ward Committee Elections in Midrand.

Midrand Primary School and Midrand High School were hosts of the Ward Committee Elections on 28 January held by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

These elections allow the public an opportunity to vote for the leaders of many portfolios, which contribute to the growth and benefit of the community such as health, environment, economic development, infrastructure, community development, community planning and housing.

In Ward 112 both the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) had candidates for all portfolios with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) candidates filling some portfolios, followed by individual candidates.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe said the elections did not take place in Ward 132 due to a lack of interest from the community with only five participants having applied for the ward committee elections.

The elections were initially supposed to run from 9am to 5pm but the IEC officials extended the time to 7pm, allowing more members an opportunity to vote for the candidate of their choice.

The ANC campaigned throughout the day at the gates of Midrand Primary School, giving out pamphlets to all those who arrived to vote.

The results of the elections are yet to be released.
