Themba Khoza protesters block K111 after 2 fatal hit-and-runs

MIDRAND – Residents protest after hit-and-runs on K111 claim 2 lives, apparently due to the absence of traffic calming measures.

Themba Khoza informal settlement residents barricaded the provincial K111 Road near Kaalfontein with stones and burnt tyres.

They were demanding that traffic calming measure be put in place after a six-year-old girl and 39-year-old man died after hit-and-runs on 24 on 25 January, respectively.

Many other fatal accidents have happened on the K111, which links Ivory Park, Ebony Park and Tembisa, whose residents have to cross the road to get to school and work.

Iris Baloyi, 33, was also hit by a car on the road in April last year. A leg injury she sustained resulted in her being crippled and losing her job. “I have four children I cannot fend for anymore because I left my piece job. We have been complaining about this road for a long time. It’s about time something is done,” she said.

Region A director, Abigail Ndlovu, who accompanied Metro police and councillors said. “The concerns of the people are genuine. So many people have lost their lives already. We are waiting for the provincial Department of Roads and Transport to address the issue and give us a way forward.”

Protesters said they would not open the road until the department commits itself to implementing traffic lights, speed humps and street lights.
