Wits University provides assistance

JOHANNESBURG – Wits University will assist those registering for this year of study.

The University of the Witswatersrand (Wits) has assisted some students who are registering by covering their registration fees.

Spokesperson for the university, Shirona Patel said that following a meeting with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and various stakeholders, the institution said academically successful students who owe less than R10 000 would be able to register this year and be able to roll their debt over.

Those who owe more than R10 000 will also be able to register, but will join an interest-free payment plan.

Patel added that the department would cover this year’s fee increase of 8 per cent for those whose combined annual family income was below R600 000. This included university students on the National Students’ Financial Aid Scheme.

The department would pay for all who had qualified for support from the scheme, including those with historical debt.

Students on the scheme may also register without making the first fee payment at the beginning of their year of study.
