Community builder Maqoqa is not just a pretty face

MIDRAND – A Midrand resident has put the community on the map with her achievements in local and global beauty contests.

In the past seven years, Midrand resident and beauty queen Sandi Maqoqa has been putting her neighbourhood on the map through her participation and victories in various beauty contents in different parts of the world.

She was Mrs Globe SA and Globe Children’s Advocate award winner in China last year; Miss Mzansi Africa first runner-up in 2012; Mrs Tshwane finalist in the same year; Miss Gauteng in 2011; and was once a cover model for Nigeria’s Supreme Magazine.

“Through my pageant titles, I manage to penetrate disadvantaged communities and offer my time and effort to make a change and inspire young people to play a better role in their societies and towards their future,” said the 42-year-old Maqoqa.

She has also been involved in career guidance on a voluntary basis. Previously, from 2011 to 2013, she was a board member of the Sandton and Midrand community police forums as a youth desk coordinator.

“The Midrand Sports League is taking off in full force this year, and there is no going back. I’ve hosted charity sports games and aim to host more in 2017 and beyond. My own netball team, [Golden Eagles], and other teams that I support play outdoor games continuously and I give my full support to all teams that work hand-in-hand with me,” said Maqoqa.

“My objective [in] establishing and coaching the sporting platforms, especially in Midrand and its neighborhoods, is to encourage communities to use sports as a common language to fight against xenophobia, substance abuse and youth-related challenges,” she said.
