Poor maintenance persists in Midrand

MIDRAND – Resident complains of lack of services in the area.

Midrand resident, Vishal Biseswar writes:

I’ve noticed a severe drop in the levels of maintenance and services being provided in the Midrand, Halfway House suburb over the past few months.

Traffic lights at large intersections such as Harry Galaun Drive and Allandale Road haven’t been working at all for weeks on end.

Grass has not been cut at all and is over a metre high in most areas that the municipality is supposed to manage. This has also led to a build-up of litter. It is an eyesore and a security risk as well.

There’s sand on the roads after rain because of no pavements and exposed ground in most areas next to roads. Most roads don’t have pavements and Midrand looks like a large construction site.

An informal taxi rank has sprung up on Allandale Road and Harry Galaun Drive, near the Spar at the Waterfall Mall. Not sure on the legalities of this.

There is an alarming trend of taxis driving on the wrong side of the road and on pavements to get around traffic and there are no visible police during peak hours to enforce the road laws. This happens daily, on Harry Galaun Drive as just one example.

I would like to address these complaints to the municipality but fear a letter would just be thrown away. Is there a ratepayers association that is looking after the rights of tax-paying Midrand residents?
