Fatal taxi crash in Midrand

MIDRAND - One person declared dead on the N1 south after Allandale, following a taxi accident

Emer-g-med paramedics responded to a taxi crash on the N1 South after Allandale Road, in Midrand, this morning at about 6am on 9 January.

Emer-g-med’s Max Cohen said paramedics arrived on the scene to find that a taxi had rear-ended another vehicle, lost control and rolled off the highway with about 15 passengers and the driver.

All 16 people were injured in the collision, and one passenger sustained critical injuries and required Advanced Life Support intervention, unfortunately the patient’s vital signs deteriorated and was later declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

One other patient sustained serious injuries that required Advanced Life Support care, whilst the remaining patients sustained minor to moderate injuries.

The patients were assessed and managed at the scene before being transported to various nearby facilities for further care, including Tembisa Hospital.

The accident caused high volumes of traffic, with 3 lanes having been closed during the treatment of patients and cleaning out the road of class and vehicle pieces left behind. Cohen said all highway lanes have now been re-opened.

The Metro Police’s specialist accident investigation unit were at the scene to investigate the exact events surrounding the collision.
