Curb festive season tragedies

MIDRAND – The Midrand Police will put initiatives in place to try and curb the number of tragedies that take place during the festive season.

Acting station commander Colonel David Mahloromela said the Midrand Police Station has started rolling out its five-stage festive season operation.
The first stage of the operation began on 10 October and will run until 30 November, with stop and searches, roadblocks, awareness campaigns and police visibility at malls, involving the community forum, Metro police, Department of Home Affairs and the Liquor Board for an integrated operation.
The second stage will run from 1 December to 16 December focusing on joint operations targeting drunk drivers, a high visibility presence in the community and more roadblocks.
Stage three will run from 16 December to 1 January and is aimed at monitoring taxi violence, some visibility in the community, monitoring exit points of Midrand and a focus on hotspots, such as Noordwyk, President Park and Glen Austin.
The fourth stage will operate from 2 January to 16 January, holding stop and searches and the last stage of the festive season operation will be from 17 January to the end of January and is aimed at raising awareness of campaigns against drugs, human trafficking and crime. Pamphlets will be distributed, advising residents of Midrand on how to avoid becoming a victim of crime.
The police hope this operation will curb the number of tragedies and crime during the festive season, and beyond.
