Keep kids happy with this list of to dos

JOBURG - We love our children to bits, but every parent and guardian knows that they need a foolproof plan to keep children occupied so that adults can have a relaxing festive season too.

Here is a list of activities you can do with children this festive season:

  •  Take them to places where they can play as much as they want to and even get to help to make their own pizzas, a great place to do so is Papachinos in Midrand, a kiddies pizza is less than R50.
  •  Take the little ones for a picnic at Zoo Lake or a park in your area.
  •  Go for a game drive at Lion Park in Johannesburg, according to the website, kids under four get in free!
  •  Take them to a movie of their choice or to watch a play at Johannesburg Theatre, you can also tour the theatre for R25 per person.
  •  Include an affordable camera as a Christmas gift and let them take photos during game drives or picnics.
  •  Include hot dogs and burgers in your festive season menus so that little ones can help mom by preparing their own food, taking your mind off another huge meal this holiday.
  •  Ask the kids where they want to go, and if possible, include their activity of choice in the holiday plans. Their activity of choice means you will not have to beg them to take part in family activities.
  •  Check the websites of local publications for information on markets that will be open over the holidays and take the family to sample goods available.
  •  If you will be at the coast, spend time at the beach.
  •  Have an afternoon of arts and crafts.
  •  Attend the Garden of Lights show at Emperors Palace this festive season, according to the website, entry is free.
  •  Bake a Christmas treat together.
  •  Take children to Gold Reef City, the activities there are fun and will keep them engaged, children under three get in free!
  •  Take your children’s toys that they have outgrown to a children’s home, they will feel great doing something for someone else during the holidays. The Teddy Bear Clinic in Johannesburg would welcome teddy bears for children in their care.
  •  Take children to Bounce in Midrand, a family of four can pay R440 for the first session.

Dettol South Africa says no matter your activity, remember that good hygiene keeps children and adults healthy. Dr Kgosi Letlape, Dettol’s handwashing ambassador, explained that ensuring that your children wash their hands, especially when playing outdoors and with friends, may prevent them from getting sick and will allow you to enjoy the holidays more. “Wash your hands before and after eating; before handling any food; after using the toilet; after playing outdoors; after touching animals; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. Hands should be washed several times a day with soap and warm water for 20 seconds or more,” said Letlape.
