Adapt calls for no gender violence this festive season

ALEXANDRA – Adapt calls for no gender violence this festive season.

Agisanang Domestic Abuse Prevention and Training (Adapt) hopes the festive season will be free from violence against women and children.

Adapt spokesperson Nomalanga Ngwenya said the festive season was just what it was, a festive season, and hence there should be no violence, and all people must come together and celebrate and be merry.

With Adapt’s message, ‘Together Moving a Non-Violent South Africa Forward’, Ngwenya said, “We condemn gender violence against women, and [violence against] our children whatever the season and time of the year. Our message never changes and remains the same.”

She added that the Section 21 non-profit organisation played a pivotal role in alleviating all forms of gender-based violence in Alexandra and beyond. The organisation desires to launch a campaign called, ‘I’m Possible’, which will highlight a positive change story that Adapt has encountered throughout its work within the community.

Adapt acknowledges the work that all service providers within the community have committed themselves to in addressing violence against women and children, she said.

“We are moving from the impossible to the possibility of combating the plight of violence on women and children. For many years, organisations have dedicated their time to addressing violence on women and children and, this year, we need to reflect on the positive change stories.”

She said the emphasis should be on ‘how many women have we assisted in realising their inner power to break the silence; how many have we assisted in receiving justice; and how many children and women have we helped in the process of healing’.
