Couple robbed, three arrested

MIDRAND – Sleeping couple robbed after wrong info was given.

Three suspects from Ivory Park are expected to appear in Tembisa Magistrates’ Court on 25 November after they allegedly robbed a couple of their belongings earlier this month.

The couple, who were sleeping, were surprised by a gang of about five men who broke down the door and entered the room. It is alleged that one of the suspects had a firearm while others used knives to threaten the couple.

Spokesperson for Ivory Park Police Station, Captain Bernard Matimulane said, upon forcing their way in, the suspects, aged between 19 and 29, demanded money and also assaulted the victims.

It is claimed that they had been tipped off by a woman, who has since disappeared, that the couple had received R30 000 in cash. It turned out that the information the suspects were acting on was inaccurate.

“Following the assault, the suspects, having satisfied themselves that the victims did not have [the] money, went on to take cellphones, running shoes, a wallet, and a bag containing clothes. In the process the victims managed to recognise some of the suspects and eventually managed to point [out] one of the suspects’ addresses [to the police],” said Matimulane.

After one of the suspects was identified by the victims, he admitted to having been one of the robbers and handed the police some of the items stolen during the robbery. His arrest led to the arrest of two more suspects, resulting in three suspects appearing in court.

“Investigations into whether these men may be connected to other house robberies in Ivory Park and elsewhere are continuing,” concluded Matimulane.
