Trench on road leaves resident frustrated

MIDRAND – A resident is frustrated over a narrow trench on 16th Road that has not been fixed.

Local resident, Judith Aiyer, recently expressed her irritation over Johannesburg Roads Authority’s lack of response in repairing a narrow trench on 16th Road in Halfway House, despite having reported the matter more than twice.

The portion of the road was dug up and a deep trench from one end to the other occurred. The road is one of the busiest in the area and is used by taxis and buses. Motorists have to stop or slow down completely in order to avoid damage to their vehicles.

Aiyer has reported the matter to JRA on three occasions, however, she has not received a response, nor has she seen any changes to the road.

“The rift was previously filled up on two occasions with just sand which has been scattered, once again, by the traffic driving through it. It has become a major risk, as this road is busy all day. Furthermore, the heavy rains have also caused the rift to become much deeper which is a major concern as this could cause damage to vehicles,” Aiyer wrote to JRA.

On 14 November, construction workers were reported to have been filling the trench with more sand. Spokesperson for JRA, Bertha Peter-Scheepers, said the agency has dispatched an inspector to investigate.

This is an ongoing story.
