Sewage nightmare

MIDRAND – Noordwyk resident's backyard was swamped with a sewage spill, but Johannesburg Water speedily attended to the matter.

Ward 112 councillor, Madeleine Hicklin, received a call on 17 November from a concerned resident staying in Noordwyk, Midrand, whose garden was being flooded by a sewage spill.

Hicklin said the matter was reported to Johannesburg Water, but the spill was so alarming that it was a health hazard.

“The resident had called Johannesburg Water and received her 800 reference number, but unfortunately, they were not aware of just how severe the spill was and informed the resident that it would be resolved ‘within 24 hours’,” added Hicklin.

The resident then contacted Hicklin in the hopes of getting the matter resolved as soon as possible.

“When I saw the extent of the spill, I immediately called Johannesburg Water’s Midrand depot manager, Akani Shibambu, and asked that he expedite the matter as one of extreme urgency. Within two hours of escalation, the garden had been returned to normal,” said Hicklin.

A team had been dispatched to the site and the sewage spill removed and on 18 November the team returned to this particular site to pressure hose down the garden to ensure that all residue from the spillage the day before had been removed.
