Man bust with arsenal to return to court

ALEXANDRA – A suspect who was out on bail for other armed crimes will find himself back in court on 28 November.

A suspect, who was arrested in Midrand on 19 November for attempted murder, hijacking, possession of illegal firearms and motor vehicle theft committed in Mpumalanga earlier this year, will find himself back in court on 28 November after being out on bail.

The suspect appeared in Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on 21 November where it emerged that he has served sentences for previous crimes of housebreaking, illegal gun possession, business robbery and possession of stolen property.

The court remanded the 35-year-old suspect, from Olivenhoutbosch, in custody for possession of restricted firearms and ammunition after he fled from a joint roadblock conducted by the Alex Cluster Police and Metro police in Blue Hills.

Spokesperson for Alex Police Station, Captain Allie Kodisang said when the suspect failed to produce a driver’s licence, he sped off in a BMW which had been reported stolen in Kempton Park in October.

Police officers gave chase and his vehicle came to a stop after it hit a kerb, leading to his arrest. In the vehicle, police found two R5 rifles, an R4, LM5 and AK rifles, 200 rounds of ammunition and six bulletproof vests.

Additional charges of possession of explosive devices including 12 electronic detonators, 24 blasting fuses, a safety fuse and a 12-volt battery often associated with ATM bombings were also found.
