Watershedding hits Joburg

JOBURG - Outlet valves of these reservoirs will be closed between 8pm and 4am.

Johannesburg Water spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, confirmed that targeted water restrictions, also known as water-shedding, will be implemented in Midrand, Diepkloof, Eldorado Park and Klipstruit to help build up reservoir levels.

Technicians will close outlet valves of these reservoirs between 8pm and 4am.

Chuene said reservoirs are experiencing high consumption levels and despite recent rains, level-2 water restrictions are still in place. She said water levels at the Integrated Vaal River system have not risen above sufficient levels.

This method, according to Chuene, was implemented to stabilise supply in areas around Lenasia, Northcliff Fairlands and Blackheath that have since seen consumers reduce their consumption significantly.

Metro police are still monitoring wasteful water users, and have to date issued 451 fines to consumers found to have contravened the Water Services By-law. Consumers are urged to continue reporting non-compliance by phoning the Metro police 24/7 line at 011 758 9650.

The entity thanked users who have heeded the call to save water, but warned that more needs to be done to reduce supply.
