While the country grapples with the allegations made in the State of Capture report, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has taken things a step further.
On 15 November, Maimane made it his duty to go to the Rosebank Police Station to lay criminal charges against President Jacob Zuma. The charges were because of Zuma misleading parliament about his interview with former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.
Maimane said the party opened the case mainly because of the proximity to Saxonwold. “To us [DA], it constitutes the scene of the crime, No 1 Saxonwold Drive, the compound of the Guptas,” he explained.
He added that the DA felt they had to fight for South Africa and, therefore, had to lay criminal charges against individuals implicated in the report. “We will not rest until Zuma accounts for the strong criminal acts committed; these are acts that steal from the livelihood of our people in our country and, ultimately, we believe action must be taken,” said Maimane, who requested that police investigate possible wrongdoings of ministers Des van Rooyen and Mosebenzi Zwane, board members of Eskom, as well as members of the Gupta family.
“The president was very aware of the transactions that were taking place with the Guptas and, certainly, in his instructions given to the former director of government communications, it was reported that funds must be deviated and advertising must be given to the New Age newspaper. That, in our view, is a case of inducement,” he
.
The DA leader also alleged that Zuma had violated the Executive Ethics Code by allowing the Gupta family to interfere with his Constitutional duties in appointing cabinet ministers and that he had violated the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act by not reporting corruption.
The police will compile the affidavit and docket, which will then be handled by the provincial police, according to Maimane.
“We have been given assurance that deliberate action will be taken on this case. We will not rest. Zuma visited Sun City [Resort] for the Gupta wedding; he will spend his time – after his presidency – at Sun City, near Soweto,” Maimane said in reference to the infamous prison.
