Councillor takes on sanitary towel drive

MIDRAND – Ward 112 councillor Madeleine Hicklin delivered donated sanitary towels at the Midrand Fire Station. Read how you can help the drive.

Ward 112 councillor Madeleine Hicklin recently delivered donated sanitary towels to the Midrand Fire Station.
Hicklin’s involvement in the sanitary towels drive began on 14 October when she joined MMC councillor Michael Sun, Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe and Region A’s director, Abigail Ndlovu, together with various officials from Region A and Metro police, on a tour of the Midrand Fire Station.
“During the tour we caught sight of the Metro police Sanitary Towel Project Box. It was empty. I decided to adopt the project as one of the ongoing initiatives that Ward 112 could contribute to,” said Hicklin.
“The Democratic Alliance Ward 112 Interim General Meeting was to be held on 19 October and I sent out a message asking for an entry fee from all those wanting to participate. The entry fee needed to be a contribution to the project, be it money or sanitary towels,” added Hicklin.
The deputy director of Metro police, Amon Kganyago, said the sanitary towels would be donated to various schools in need by Metro police during a function celebrating 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse.
The superintended Thandi Soga from Metro police’s Region A said, “The project is in line with the City’s Joburg Ten Plus Strategy to work with the community in all aspects.”
Soga said she feels it is significant to promote social obligation under the theme of 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse.
Hicklin concluded, “A further drive is already underway with drop-off points at Usteria Hair Salon in the Carlswald Decor Park, Midrand Montessori Schools, Harcourt’s Midrand, and Remata Communications and Printers.”
