MIDRAND – Midrand resident helps homeless man in need of a wheelchair and has called on the community for donations.
Midrand resident, Anton van Wyk has identified a homeless man in need because he is an amputee with one leg and is currently using crutches to get around.
Van Wyk said the homeless man, James Nkabi (64), sleeps near McDonald’s on Church Street in Halfway House, Midrand.
Van Wyk has personally taken it upon himself to repair an old wheelchair and give it to Nkabi to make his life easier. Therefore, Van Wyk has called upon the public to lend a helping hand and donate money or material for the parts on the wheelchair Van Wyk is repairing. He said he has done some of the repairs and put additions to the wheelchair but said he cannot afford to purchase the needed materials to complete the work.
Chris Booysen of Wheelchairs on the Run confirmed that Van Wyk had contacted the company for a quotation on the missing parts for the wheelchair.
According to Van Wyk, Wheelchairs on the Run quoted him for lube which is used to strengthen the wheels and make them more user-friendly which costs R700, a tyre for R700, gloves at R100 and alterations for R500.
Van Wyk said people can either make a deposit to AJH van Wyk, Absa account number 922 150 9921; or deliver the material or money to 110 Modderfontein Road in President Park, Midrand.
