Crime tip-offs pay off

MIDRAND – If you know of a crime taking place in your area, anonymously contact police, do not keep quiet.

Continuous appeals by the Ivory Park Police for the community to provide information on crime have yielded positive results, with a total of three firearms being recovered by the police since Friday.

On 4 November police received a tip-off from a member of the community about two men who were seen in possession of firearms at a park in Ivory Park’s Ext 15. A quick reaction led the police to the two suspects, who, it turned out, were in possession of firearms.

Police spokesperson, Captain Bernard Matimulane said that when police found the men, there was a little scuffle after suspects refused to cooperate but officers managed to overpower and arrest theM. “They [suspects] were found in possession of an illegal firearm and a toy gun, which, to the untrained eye, looked like a real firearm. The two suspects, aged 26 and 28, are from Alexandra and it was immediately established that earlier that day they had [allegedly] been involved in a robbery incident in Alexandra.

“In another case of the community performing their civic duty, a 31-year-old man from Kaalfontein in Midrand, was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and one round of ammunition. Again, police rushed to an address in Kaalfontein after they were tipped off about the man. The suspect was arrested for illegally possessing a firearm and brought to the Ivory Park holding cells.”
All suspects are expected to appear in Tembisa Magistrates’ Court soon facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, and in the first case, also for armed robbery.

Station commander, Brigadier David Ngcobo has thanked the community for assisting the police in getting rid of illegal firearms, widely used in committing crimes in Ivory Park and beyond. He said,

“As the festive season approaches, we call upon the people Ivory Park to help us in making their holidays as safe as possible by being the eyes and ears of the police. Having arrested these suspects, we have lessened the number of robberies and, possibly, murders in Ivory Park.”
