Five lives lost and 11 injured in Midrand accident

Emer-g-med's spokesperson Max Cohen said five people have been killed and 11 injured after a car lost control and went into oncoming traffic on the R562 just after Celliers Street in Randjesfontein.

Cohen explained that Emer-g-med and Netcare 911 paramedics responded to the accident scene just after 4pm to  find that a car had been T-boned by a bakkie at a high-speed – allegedly after the car lost control and aquaplaned over the wet road into oncoming traffic.

“On assessment paramedics found that the five passengers of the car, three adult males, an adult female and an approximately four-year-old girl had sustained fatal injuries and showed no signs of life. They were declared dead on the scene,” said Cohen.

He further mentioned, “The driver of the car was found heavily entrapped within the wreckage and was in a very critical condition – having sustained massive head, chest and abdominal trauma.”

“Paramedics worked to stabilise the critically injured patient, performing multiple life-saving Advanced Life Support interventions, while the Netcare911 Heavy Rescue Unit extricated the man from the crumpled remains of the vehicle – using the “jaws of life” and other specialised hydraulic equipment,” he added.

Cohen revealed, “Once the driver was freed from the vehicle, he was further stabilised, and put on full life support, before being rushed by EMER-G-MED to a nearby hospital for urgent specialist care.”

The ten occupants from the bakkie, most of which were seated on the back, were fortunate to sustain only minor to moderate injuries.

The ten patients were treated on the scene before being transported by EMER-G-MED and other services to a number of nearby facilities.

The scene has been handed over to JMPD’s specialist Accident Investigation Unit for intensive investigation into the exact cause of the horror crash, he concluded.
