Pendoring 2016 winners

JOHANNESBURG – The cream of the crop honoured at Pendoring 2016.

King James, an advertising agency group has won Pendoring’s sought-after Prestige Award for the second consecutive year for its Sanlam Musiekfees campaign.

The Umpetha Award for the best advertisement in an indigenous language other than Afrikaans, is shared between Ogilvy & Mather Johannesburg, for its radio advert for KFC, Slyza Tsotsi 3 and The Odd Number, also for a radio advert and Umsebenzi for BBC Brit. Both ads are in Zulu.

The Prestige Award and the Umpetha Award consist of an overseas study tour worth R100 000. The winners were announced in front of a packed and appreciative audience at the glittering annual awards evening at Vodacom World in Midrand, recently. At the same time, Pendoring’s 21st birthday was celebrated in style.

The guests were captivated by the sizzling performance of artists, Elvis Blue and the Code Red Drum Corps, not to mention the very entertaining emcees, Schalk Bezuidenhout and Rozanne McKenzie.

Carina Bonse and Gabi van Niekerk from Red & Yellow School of Logic and Magic in Cape Town, won the Overall Student Award with their entry, Die Water is Perfek! in the category, Integrated Campaign. They will share the R10 000 for the best Afrikaans work in the student category. Their campaign was also the only student entry that took gold.

The judging panel sang the praises of the King James’ campaign, Elke Woord ‘n Meesterstuk for Sanlam’s music festival. “Original and innovative; it also shows an appreciation for Afrikaans music. In addition, King James succeeded in creating an interactive experience that the audience will not easily forget,” they said.

The judges were impressed with the quality of the entries in the radio category and it came as no surprise that both Umpetha winners were from this category.

A total of nine gold and 37 silver Pendoring trophies were awarded – eight gold to the professional agencies, and one to students; and 29 silver awards went to agencies and eight silver to students.

Of the eight gold Pendorings awarded to agencies, King James Cape Town, Mullen Lowe Cape Town and Ogilvy & Mather Johannesburg, won two each and FCB Johannesburg and The Odd Number, won one each.

Red & Yellow School of Logic and Magic in Cape Town won the only gold in the student category.

In terms of silver, FCB Johannesburg came out on top with six silver trophies, followed by Joe Public, FCB 1886 and Ogilvy & Mather Johannesburg with three each. King James Cape Town, Promise Brand Specialists, DDB South Africa and DPK won two silver awards each, while Mullen Lowe Cape Town, FCB Cape Town, 34°, Jupiter Drawing Room, OpenCo and Ninety9Cents Communications won one each.

The silver winners in the student categories were: North-West University (1), AAA School of Advertising Johannesburg (1), AAA School of Advertising Cape Town (1), Vega School of Brand Leadership Pretoria (2) and Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography (3).
