Mom drives herself and son to safety

MIDRAND – Have you had a bad experience with taxi drivers? Read about Ntando Ncube's story.

Ntando Ncube still cannot believe how she managed to swerve out of the way after a careless taxi driver cut in front of her on Lever Road in Midrand.

“On 25 October, my six-year-old son and I were driving along Lever Road headed to Noordwyk when a taxi from the oncoming lane suddenly made an illegal u-turn in front of my vehicle and sped off.

“I was seconds away from crashing into that taxi, I was so upset at the way the driver just got onto my lane without care that another was approaching and so close. With my emotions high I somehow managed to do serious defensive driving and braked so suddenly I thought I would crash.”

She said an hour later she could not stop shaking and stated that it was a miracle that she managed to drive home safely after that. She stressed that something should be done to deal with lawless taxi drivers.

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said police would continue to take a tough approach to reckless drivers especially as the festive season approaches. Minnaar stated,” As we move towards the festive season, there are plans to support the national road safety plan and to give traffic fines for moving traffic violations, which will include skipping of red traffic lights, overtaking when not safe, crossing solid lanes, speeding and arresting drivers for excessively high speed, reckless driving and drunken driving.”
